Fabric Requirements:
White– 2 yards
Grey-1/2 yard
Pink-3/4 yard (includes Binding)
Green– 1/4 yard
Purple– 3/4 yard
Note: I worked from my stash so I made more variety in the hearts than is pictured in the original drawing. I also had enough cut off corners from my larger blocks to use for the bottoms of many of my smaller hearts. Use those bonus half square triangles! and let’s pretend you don’t notice my two different whites.

Making the X (Hug block)- make 2
Cut eight squares of purple at 5 1/2 inches
and sixteen squares of white at 3 1/2 inches
Draw a diagonal line on the white square, match it to the corner of the purple square and sew ON the line.
For the bonus half square triangle to use later in the small hearts, draw a line half an inch away from the previous line, closer to the corner. Sew ON this line and cut midway between the two lines. You will need to trim this bonus square to 2 1/2 inches before you use them in the heart.

Repeat the process for the opposite corner and complete eight purple blocks in this way to create your X blocks.

For the O (Kiss Blocks)
Cut eight grey squares at 5 1/2 inches
And sixteen white squares at 3 1/2 inches and repeat the exact process that you used for the X blocks.
Lay your blocks out in the proper orientation and sew the units together as you would a 4 patch block.
Note: TO properly nest seams– half of your blocks should be pressed towards the color and half towards the white.

Heart Blocks– make 3
Cut 3 of each color and 6 white squares that measure 5 7/8 inches.
These will be the bottom of the heart blocks.
Draw a diagonal line on all the white squares, line them up with a color square, and sew 1/4 inch away from the line on both sides, using the line as the guide for the edge of your presser foot.

For the top of the heart blocks, cut 3 purple and 3 grey squares that are 5 1/2 inches and 12 white squares that measure 2 1/2 inches. If you want a flatter top of the heart, you can use 2 inch squares.
Draw a diagonal line on all the white squares.
Match them to the top two corners of a color square and sew ON the line.
I do not save these bonus triangles because they are way too small.
Press towards the purple and away from the grey so that seams will NEST.

Lay out your heart blocks in the correct orientation and sew together as you would a four patch.
Make sure to nest the seams.
When you press any four patch,
it helps with bulk if you separate
the seams as in the picture.

Making a mini four patch in the
middle.
If seams are pressed in opposite
directions, they will NEST nicely next to each other as in the picture. I do this mostly by feel. You can feel with your fingers when the seams are sitting right nest to each other.

For the pink Tic Tac Toe lines cut:
two strips 2 X 10 1/2
Four strips 2 X 12
Two strips 36 1/2 inches
Also cut :White- Eight 2 inch squares. These are sewn, on the diagonal as pictured, to only one end of the four 12 inch strips of pink and to both ends of the 36 1/2 inch stirps. The direction of each diagonal can be random so that it looks more hand drawn in the finished quilt.
For putting the quilt center together
Cut:
Two large white squares that measure 12 inches
Three white strips 2 X 12
Five white strips 2 X 10 1/2

For Row 1: Sew a 10 1/2 white strip to the left of a heart block and a 12 1/2 inch white strip to the top of that heart block.
Sew a 10 1/2 inch white strip to the top of an X block. Join those to a large white square with the longer pink strips in between as pictured above.

For Row 2: Sew a 10 1/2 inch white strip to the left of an O block and the right of an X block. Sew a pink 10 1/2 inch strip to each side of a heart block and join together as pictured above.

For Row 3: sew a 10 1/2 inch white strip to the right side of a heart block and a 12 inch strip to the bottom of that same heart. Sew a 10 1/2 inch strip to the bottom of an O block. Join with a large white square and the 12 inch pink strips as pictured above.
To join the rows all together, you need a 36 1/2 inch pink strip between the rows.
When joining long strips to your quilt, such as lattice and borders, you need to find the center of the strip and match that to the center of the quilt piece you are joining it to. Pin the centers and then ends. Then pin the rest so that it comes out smoothly. HINT: if there seems to be a bit more bulk on one piece, put that side towards the feed dogs of your machine. This will help EASE the pieces together as long as they are both cut to the exact lengths needed.
Your quilt center should measure 36 1/2 inches.
Now we will add a 4 inch wide border, placing small hearts almost randomly.
I made 15 small hearts. (5 purple, 3 grey, 3 aqua, 2 pink, 2 green)
The small hearts are also a four patch.
As much as I dislike very small pieces, I had to use 1 inch white squares for the corners of the small hearts.
So, start by cutting sixty 1 inch squares of white. (4 per small heart)
These are sewn to the top two corners of two 2 1/2 inch square (per small heart).
As much as I dislike very small pieces, I had to use 1 inch white squares for the corners of the small hearts.
Each small heart needs the following.
Four 2 1/2 inch squares of the color
Two 2 1/2 inch squares of white
Four 1 inch squares of white
To Complete each small heart:
Sew a 1 inch square, on the diagonal, to the top two corners of two 2 1/2 inch square. As pictured, I do not draw this line. I draw a line on my machine table and use it as a guide.

Match a color 2 1/2 inch square with a white one and sew ON the diagonal– draw the line or use one on the machine table, whichever you prefer. Trim the excess. These are the bottom of your heart. Remember, you can use the cut offs from your larger blocks if you choose to do so– just make sure to trim them to 2 1/2 inches first.

The border pieces are all cut at 4 1/2 inches wide. Here are my borders but you can adjust as you like so that your small hearts are wherever you like.
Top Border: 3 hearts, white 16 1/2 inches, 1 heart, white 12 1/2 inches– total of 44 1/2 inches
Bottom Border: white 16 1/2 inches, 1 heart, white 12 1/2 inches, 3 hearts– total of 44 1/2 inches
Side borders– each should measure 36 1/2 inches.
Left side from top down: two hearts, white 15 1/2 inches, 2 hearts, white 5 1/2 inches
Right side from top down: white 16 1/2 inches, 1 heart, white 8 1/2 inches, 2 hearts.
Be sure to sew through points where necessary!
Because I do not like to sew through points for my binding, I chose to add an additional white border. Strips are cut 2 inches wide. The two side borders need to be 44 1/2 inches long and the top and bottom both need to be 47 1/2 inches long. Your finished quilt should be a 47 1/2 inch square. I only cut 5 strips by WOF (width of fabric) to get the extra length.
A printable version of this pattern, with additional pictures, is available at my Etsy shop, Andra & Ivy for $5.00.
